EDMUND WHITE
The great and mind-bogglingly prolific author Edmund White in his hotel room. I shot this when he read at the 1989 International Festival of Authors in Toronto, the first time I heard him read. From thereon I read all of his books in his voice, colouring them with more depth and a conspiratorial salaciousness. RIP to one of the last of the “new” generation of gay writers, a unique voice who reported from the frontlines of the Stonewall riot, and through a massive body of work, documented his own life in the rise of 70s gay liberation, the AIDS crisis, and being a sexy slutty senior. That he had time to teach literature and writing while also researching and writing massive volumes on Genet, Proust, and others is quite astonishing. What a life.
